Recipes for the Play & Freeze Ice Cream Ball

It’s that time of year again and our fabulous Ice Cream Balls are leaping off the shelves and making their way to our lovely customers.

We have one at home and what is so great is their flexibility.  No electricity required, just pop the ingredients in one end and some ice in the other, chuck it around the garden, beach or campsite for a while, and at the end of all the fun, you have your very own delicious ice-cream.  What could be better ?

The standard recipe for Basic Vanilla Ice Cream is just a pint of cream, 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla and 1/3 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar.  This will give you about a pint of smooth and creamy ice cream.

But why stop at Vanilla – try some of the following for some lovely and new tastes !   Just add the following to the basic vanilla recipe …….

Chocolate Chip: Add 1/3 cup chocolate chips.

Mint Chocolate Chip: Add ¼ teaspoon mint extract and ¼ cup chocolate chips.

Rum Coconut (one for the grown ups!): Add 2 tablespoons rum and ¼ cup grated coconut.

Peach: a pint of cream, a medium ripe peach, sliced and pared, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/3 cup sugar. (Add peaches after 10 minutes of mixing).

One of our favourites: Key Lime Ice Cream: a pint of cream, ½ cup key lime juice and 1/3 cup sugar plus 2 tablespoons.

Or try this recipe: Chocolate-Banana: 1/2 pint of whole cream, 3 teaspoons of chocolate syrup, 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1/2 of a banana (mashed). Mix in bowl until mixture is a light brown. Then put in metal cylinder and play / freeze.

Or you could always make a tasty Fruit Sorbet
Pour 1 pint of fresh juice into a container, add sugar to taste, and mix well. Pour into metal cylinder and play / freeze to the consistency you desire.

Yummmmm….. off to make some now.
